Swimming Competition For Babies

A swimming competition for babies, aged 0 to 3 years, was held in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province on Aug 22, 2010. This is so adorable.

 

Underwater Photographs of Swimming Babies

Phil Shaw and his partner Ana Torres set up London Baby Swim in 2008, offering classes for parents and babies as young as six weeks old to take to the water and develop their skills. Enrolment numbers rose from just 85 in the first year to 500 this summer.

'The classes are great because the babies develop all sorts of motor and learning skills' explains Phil Shaw. 'In the first few years of a baby's life they experience huge development as their brain grows faster than in later years'

These are held with parents also in the water and are led by a team of qualified instructors. Up until the age of around nine months babies have a miraculous gag reflex which blocks off their windpipes as soon as they are underwater, allowing them to instinctively hold their breath.

Parents spend up to four weeks teaching their babies to get used to the water, holding them as they splash about. But some take a little longer than others to get used to going underwater.

The Spanish Baby Jumping Festival of El Colacho

Every year during the month of June, the Spanish village of Castrillo de Murcia near Burgos holds its traditional Baby-Jumping Festival as part of its Corpus Christi celebrations. During the act, known as El Colacho, men dressed as the Devil (known as the Colacho) leaps over babies born during the previous twelve months of the year who lie on mattresses in the street.

The Catholic festival of Corpus Christi is celebrated all over Spain with processions, mystery plays and a wide variety of popular celebrations, but this bizarre tradition is seen only in Castrillo de Murcia. The tradition dates back to 1620, although the origins are vague. It is believed that as the incarnate devils jump they take all their evil with them and the children are cleansed. 

Annual Baby Crying Contest, Japan

When it comes to weird of the weirdest customs, rest assured, Japan is always going to deliver. This time it comes in form of the annual baby crying contest, Naki Sumo. And look who is going to scare the tiny toddlers – 500 pound Sumo wrestlers.

Tens of eager mothers bring babies each year to the Sensoji Temple in Tokyoto, where Sumo wrestlers and high priests are close at hand to coax the babies into wailing. The baby which cries the loudest and longest wins the contest. Participating parents believe that Sumo wrestler induced cries are beneficial for the health of the babies, which is debatable. The 400-year old ritual is also believed to ward off evil spirits, which is arguable too.

This year 80 babies, all less than a year old, took part in the event to cry. The atmosphere must have been maddening.

International Children's Day

The World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland proclaimed June 1 to be International Children's Day in 1925. It is not clear as to why June 1 was chosen as the International Children's Day: one theory has it that the Chinese consul-general in San Francisco (USA) gathered a number of Chinese orphans to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in 1925, which happened to be on June 1 that year, and also coincided with the conference in Geneva. The holiday is celebrated on 1 June each year. It is usually marked with speeches on children's rights and wellbeing, children TV programs, parties, various actions involving or dedicated to children, families going out etc. It was adopted mostly by former and current Communist and Socialist countries. -- Wikipedia (25 images)
